Oracle provides diagnostic software which may be run on a system during their support process. This software should be downloaded and run at least once to document the system and installation. It should be reviewed with your DBA to help you determine when this information will be useful, and it should be available to your DBA during problem diagnostics. If an individual DBA finds this documentation interesting on a regular basis it should be scripted and published, as required.
Database Consultants has written Oracle Log Monitoring software that we will demonstrate sometime during our friendship. It’s online but not particularly intuitive to use until you get the hang of it. ORALogs © consists of UNIX agent that writes HTML files and a website front end that makes them readable.
Individual Oracle instances on multiple UNIX hosts may be monitored from one Website. That single site may be internal to your organization or on the Internet. Multiple hosts are supported. This software is used daily at several locations for up to twelve hosts. No agent is planned for Windows. Updates to the agent are free to existing customers.
Installation for one Website and one UNIX host is currently $1000. Additional hosts are installed for $100. This software is tested with Oracle7 through Oracle10g. Full access to source code is allowed under this agreement; however code remains copyrighted material.
There are three setup requirements: 1) there must be an entry in the “oratab” file with “Y” for the instance, 2) Unix “cron” must be running and available to the Oracle account, and 3) ftp must be allowed from the host to your Website.
Other Oracle services are available by a qualified Oracle Database Administrator. If you are not currently backing up your Oracle data this would be an excellent time to do so. We have scripts available to make this job painless and affordable.
